The Diabetic Diet

A traditional diabetic diet consists of portion control, limiting carbohydrates, and calorie restrictions. Luckily, there's a better approach. A low-fat, plant-based diet is ideal for diabetes and its conditions, such as heart disease, weight gain, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Approaches to Diabetes through Diet

A plant-based diet is a powerful tool for preventing, managing, and even reversing type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes causes other health complications including:

  • Neuropathy (which can cause numbness in the feet)

  • Peripheral Vascular Disease which can cause gangrene in the extremities and lead to amputation.

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition that can lead to diabetic coma, or even death.

  • Kidney Disease and Kidney Failure leading to dialysis.

  • High Blood Pressure which raises your risk for heart attack and stroke.

  • Gastroparesis which causes food to digest too slowly and may cause you to eventually need a feeding tube.

  • Stroke – your chances of having a stroke are 1.5 times higher than in people who don’t have diabetes.

  • Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome, or HHNS, is a serious condition which causes severe dehydration that will lead to seizures, comaand eventually death.

  • Alzheimer’s Disease is now being called Type 3 Diabetes.

Tackle Diabetes with a Plant-based Diet

"A plant-based diet is a powerful tool for preventing, managing, and even reversing type 2 diabetes. Not only is this the most delicious ‘prescription’ you can imagine, but it’s also easy to follow. Unlike other diets, there’s no calorie counting, no skimpy portions, and no carb counting. Plus, all the ‘side effects’ are good ones.

Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs

Dr. Barnard's book illustrates the scientific breakthrough of a plant-based diet's benefits for the patient with diabetes. Previously, most health professionals managed the symptoms of the diabetic patient because once you had diabetes, you were stuck with it, or so it was thought. The progression usually runs from one health issue after another, worsening eyesight, non-healing infections, nerve symptoms, to heart and kidney problems. Dr. Barnard has proven that it is possible to tackle diabetes with a whole-foods plant-based diet in a step-by-step plan, including tracking progress, troubleshooting tips, and supplements, and exercise suggestions.

Proven Clinical Research

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine conducted a clinical research study on thousands of patients with type 2 diabetes to see a plant-based diet's effects. The 2003 study, funded by NIH, determined the WFPBD controlled sugar more effectively than a traditional diabetic diet which limited calories and carbohydrates. It took a few weeks for participants to see dramatic improvements, including weight loss, HbA1c lowered, and insulin sensitivity improved. Research has shown that a diet high in fat causes cells to clog, interfering with moving sugar out of the bloodstream and into our cells. Instead of using the sugar for cell power, the glucose remains floating in the blood, leading to diabetes. A plant-based diet that is low in fat allows insulin to function correctly.
